Abstract

This paper will examine and analyse conversations conducted in English by Ll Xhosa speakers. Overt linguistic features and covert discourse conventions are discussed, and reasons for their differences from Ll < -- > Ll speech are postulated. Finally, some questions arising from the analysis will be raised.
