Abstract

This study attempts to identify some of the strengths and weaknesses of the English of
black high school pupils. A random sample of pupils from three classes in each of two
schools was selected and given a battery of tests consisting of essay writing, spelling,
word usage and punctuation. The method of evaluation of the test battery is
described. The results of the tests are outlined and suggestions for the development of
an intervention programme are given.
